When Danny Daniel called to set up a flats fishing trip for he and his 6 year old son, Brodie, I was a little gun shy. Don't get me wrong. I love kids. It's just that my style of fishing is pretty advanced and can be very challenging even for adults. I've had teenage boys on my boat that got bored and turned to their video games instead of fishing. Danny was pretty sure that Brodie could handle it so we booked the trip.
I met Danny and Brodie at Conn Brown Harbor early one May morning and I was immediately impressed. Brodie introduced himself with a firm handshake and had all his stuff ready to go. He brought his own rod and reel and life jacket. He even had polorized sunglasses! (A lot of my adult clients show up without polorized sunglasses) Brodie was poised and confident. Not, at all, overly excited as I had expected. He was ready to try some of this sight fishing stuff.
After we launched and headed out the channel I started to explain how sight fishing worked. I told them that when I saw a fish I would tell them where it was based on the clock and distance. (12 o'clock being the front of the boat) Brodie told me he could not tell time so we would have to use another method. We decided to use the point method. I was really hoping for some tailing fish that would be easy to see and easy to catch. We never found any tails but we did find some fish.
As it turned out Brodie did have some problems with an accurate cast and did not catch a fish all day. He did see a lot of fish and ended up on the casting platform with Danny helping spot fish for his dad. He stayed focused all day and never lost interest. He never once complained that he was bored. Brodie Daniel is a true angler and is welcome back on my boat anytime he wants.
